Epidural Steroid Injections

An epidural steroid injection is a minimally invasive treatment that delivers pain medicine quickly through a syringe. Patients receive the injection at their epidural area, a fat-covered part of the spinal cord that protects it from damage. The pain medicine injected is powerful anti-inflammatory medication.

An epidural steroid injection may be recommended as treatment for a number of conditions, including:

  • Herniated discs
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Bone spurs
  • Joint cysts
  • Arthritis
  • Thickened ligaments

The epidural steroid injection usually relieves pain associated with these conditions for a temporary period of time. To treat the root cause of these conditions, further aspects of a treatment plan are often necessary. Your physician will discuss all treatment options with you, including any physical therapy or core exercises to re-strengthen your spine.

An epidural steroid injection is a very simple and quick treatment option. You will receive a local anesthetic prior to the injection. In some cases, a type of X-ray ay be used to assist your physician in placement of the injection. You may experience immediate pain relief followed by gradual relief as the inflammation around the spinal cord subsides. Once the injection is complete, you will be asked to wait in a recovery area for a brief period before leaving with your contact person.

Pre-procedure and post-procedure instructions are minimal and will be explained by your physician or our nursing staff.
